Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command have arrested Chinedu Aniekuoko for allegedly locking up and maltreating his sister, Grace Aniekuoku, for over one year and four months.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Abuja on Monday.
According to the Commissioner, the arrest followed a distress report received by the command on June 12, alleging that the 36-year-old victim had been chained and confined in a room by her elder brother for about 17 months.
Sanusi said he immediately directed detectives from the Katampe Division to visit the scene after receiving the report.
He explained that when the officers arrived, the suspect allegedly became hostile and refused to grant them access to the premises where his sister was being held.
The Commissioner said the officers, however, forced their way into the room and found the victim in chains, extremely emaciated, and living in her own waste under very poor sanitary conditions.
“Mr Chinedu was promptly arrested, while the victim was rescued and rushed to the hospital by the police, where she is currently receiving medical attention,” Sanusi said.
The police boss further revealed that preliminary investigations showed that the suspect had allegedly taken the victim’s son to an unknown location about two years ago.
According to him, the suspect allegedly kept his sister in confinement to prevent her from asking questions about the whereabouts of her child.
Sanusi said the victim is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital, while efforts are ongoing to trace and rescue her missing son.
He added that the suspect remains in police custody and will be charged in court after investigations are concluded.
The Commissioner commended residents who provided the information that led to the rescue, saying the operation was made possible through timely intelligence from patriotic residents of the FCT.
