The Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) has confirmed Kayode Iriabhekha from Owan East Local Government Area as a commissioner nominee following his screening and the presentation of a report by the House Committee on Rules and Business.
The confirmation was made during the plenary on Monday after the Majority Leader and Chairman of the Rules and Business Committee, Jonathan Ibhamawu, presented the committee’s report on the nominee whose name was forwarded to the House by Governor Monday Okpebholo.
The House also received a letter from Governor Okpebholo seeking the confirmation of Terry Igiebor as the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Ecological Fund and Management Commission. Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, referred the nomination to the Committee on Rules, Business and Government House with a directive to report back within two weeks.
In another development, the Assembly received a letter from the State Chairman of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Babatunde Olukoga, notifying the House of the defection of three lawmakers to the party.
The affected lawmakers are Charity Aiguobarhueghian, representing Ovia North-East I Constituency, and Natasha Osawaru of Egor Constituency, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the NDC, as well as Omosigho Frank of Oredo East Constituency, who moved from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the NDC.
The letter further proposed Osawaru as the new Minority Leader and Omosigho Frank as the Minority Whip.
However, the Majority Leader, Jonathan Ibhamawu, moved that the letter be stepped down, arguing that due process had not been followed since the affected lawmakers had not formally informed the House of their defection.
Several lawmakers, including Addeh Isibor, Andrew Uzamere, Deputy Speaker Maria Atu, Ifada Sunday, Richard Edosa, and Aghedo Sunday, supported the motion.
Ruling on the matter, Speaker Agbebaku set aside the letter, assuring members that the requests would be considered after all constitutional and procedural requirements had been fulfilled.
Meanwhile, the Assembly adopted its Business Calendar for the First Quarter of the Fourth Session of the 8th Assembly. Presenting the calendar, the Majority Leader said the House would sit for seven days in June, 23 days in July, and 21 days in August, making a total of 51 sitting days for the quarter.
Also during the plenary, the Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture and Food Security, Kaycee Osadolor, submitted a joint report on a bill seeking to repeal existing laws establishing the Edo State College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and enact a new law establishing the Edo State College of Agriculture, Science and Technology. The report was deferred for consideration at a later date.
Speaker Agbebaku also congratulated members on the third anniversary of the 8th Assembly, marked on June 16, 2026, and commended staff of the Assembly for their dedication and commitment to duty. The House thereafter adjourned plenary to Monday, June 29, 2026.
