Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has alleged that some persons are sponsoring insecurity across the country in an attempt to distract President Bola Tinubu and tarnish his administration.
Okpebholo made the allegation on Tuesday in Benin City during the flag-off of the All Progressives Congress, APC, campaign for the Local Government Council elections in Edo South Senatorial District.
The governor warned those allegedly behind the insecurity to desist and allow the President to focus on governance.
According to him, the recent rise in insecurity in parts of the country was not accidental but allegedly orchestrated by the opposition.
“There is no vacancy in Aso Rock. They can even kidnap all of us yes, there is no vacancy in Aso Rock. What is happening today is the handiwork of the opposition,” Okpebholo said.
He argued that sponsoring insecurity would not help anyone gain political power, whether in the Senate, House of Representatives or the presidency.
“They have failed. Have they not failed? Is it by kidnapping children? Then who are you going to govern? There will be nobody for you to govern. So let them give us peace so that we can rule well,” the governor added.
Okpebholo said President Tinubu had done more for the country than his predecessors, adding that the benefits of the removal of fuel subsidy were already being felt through various projects across Edo State.
He commended APC members who emerged as candidates after the party’s primary election ahead of the forthcoming council polls.
The governor said their victories in the local government elections would signal the party’s capacity to deliver the 2.5 million votes pledged to President Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
Also speaking at the event, the Edo State APC Chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, described the APC as the only viable political party in the state.
Tenebe urged the candidates to take the message of the governor’s developmental strides to all parts of the state and replicate same in their respective local government areas.
The highlight of the event was the official unveiling of APC candidates from Edo South by the governor.
Those unveiled included Ogbeide Ihama for Senate, Dr Paddy Iyamu for Oredo Federal Constituency, Omorede Igbinedion for Ovia Federal Constituency, among others.
