Former Labour Party spokesman and actor, Kenneth Okonkwo, has made fresh allegations against Peter Obi and the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), claiming that aspirants seeking elective positions were compelled to pay millions of naira in what he described as bribes.
Speaking during a recent interview on Channels Television, Okonkwo alleged that an Anambra State House of Representatives aspirant, Obunike Ohebu, sent him a distress message accusing party leaders of scamming aspirants.
According to Okonkwo, the aspirant claimed that after purchasing an expression of interest form, House of Representatives hopefuls were allegedly instructed to pay an additional ₦10 million, while Senate aspirants were asked to pay ₦20 million to South-East caucus leaders.
“Anybody who is voting for NDC or Peter Obi is voting for crim+nality,” Okonkwo said, alleging that the payments were presented as support for Peter Obi’s presidential ambition.
He further claimed that many aspirants paid the money believing it would secure their nominations, only to later discover that several other contenders had made similar payments and were subsequently directed to participate in direct primaries.
Okonkwo contrasted the situation with what he claimed occurred in another political bloc, where constituencies allegedly agreed on single candidates to avoid disputes.
The former Labour Party spokesman maintained that the development was evidence of alleged misconduct within the party’s candidate selection process.
