The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State and serving senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District, Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, has strongly denied any involvement in the abduction of Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, the sister of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and her twin sons.
Alli, in a sharp rebuttal issued through his media office on Sunday, dismissed the allegation as false, malicious and politically engineered to undermine his rising political profile ahead of the 2027 governorship contest in Oyo State.
The senator’s reaction followed reports circulating on social media linking him—directly and indirectly—to the kidnapping incident, which has generated widespread public concern and political speculation within the state.
Describing the claim as “irresponsible and defamatory,” Alli’s media office said the publication lacked credibility and was designed to mislead the public and damage the senator’s reputation.
“We categorically state that the report is false, malicious, politically motivated and completely devoid of credibility,” the statement read.
The office stressed that there was no link whatsoever between the senator and the incident, insisting that attempts to associate him with the abduction were rooted in political desperation.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Senator Alli has no connection whatsoever with the said criminal incident, the individuals mentioned, or any activity related to kidnapping or violence,” it added.
Alli, a legal practitioner and traditional titleholder in Ibadan, is currently serving his first term in the 10th Senate under the APC platform, while also emerging as a key contender in the state’s evolving 2027 governorship race.
His media office argued that the attempt to tie campaign materials or political paraphernalia to criminal activity was part of a broader smear campaign allegedly orchestrated by political opponents unsettled by his growing acceptance across the state.
“It is absurd and illogical for anyone to attempt to drag his hard-earned reputation into criminal allegations founded on unverified claims allegedly made by a suspect under investigation,” the statement said.
The senator’s camp further noted that even the circulating report admitted that security agencies had not established any link between him and the kidnapping case, describing that detail as evidence that the allegation was speculative and unfounded.
“It is disturbing that faceless propagandists would weaponise unconfirmed claims to mislead the public and heat up the polity,” it added.
Reiterating his stance against criminality, Alli condemned kidnapping and other violent crimes, insisting that he had consistently supported security initiatives aimed at improving safety in Oyo State and across Nigeria.
“Senator Alli strongly condemns kidnapping and every form of criminality. He remains committed to strengthening security architecture and promoting peace and development,” the statement noted.
The senator’s office urged the public to disregard the report entirely and cautioned against the spread of unverified claims capable of escalating political tension or interfering with ongoing security investigations.
It also called on security agencies to trace the origin of the allegation and prosecute those behind what it described as deliberate fake news and political blackmail.
Alli reaffirmed his focus on legislative duties and his political ambition, stressing that distractions would not derail his commitment to public service and his vision for a more secure and prosperous Oyo State.
