India summons US envoy after attack on vessel with 24 Indian crew off Oman coast

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has summoned Jason Meeks, Chargé d’Affaires of the United States, to lodge a protest over an attack on a commercial vessel off the coast of Oman.

India also reiterated its call for de-escalation in the region, protection of commercial shipping, and restoration of safe navigation in international waters.

The MEA condemned the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello, which had 24 Indian crew members onboard. According to the government, 21 Indian nationals have been rescued, while three remain missing.
The attack on Settebello came two days after a Palau-flagged vessel carrying 24 Indians was attacked by the US Navy while allegedly attempting to evade a US blockade of Iranian ports.

In a statement, the MEA said the Indian Embassy in Oman is closely monitoring the situation and is coordinating with local authorities in the ongoing search and rescue operation.

India has expressed concern over the rising threat to commercial vessels in the region amid escalating tensions involving the United States and Iran.
