The funeral ceremonies will be held from July 5 to 9, with events scheduled in Tehran and Qom on July 5, 6 and 7, followed by the final ceremony in Mashhad on July 9. There has been no official confirmation from New Delhi on the invitation.
Following Khamenei’s death on February 28, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi to sign the condolence book on behalf of the Indian government. It remains unclear who will represent India at the funeral ceremonies.
The invitation comes amid a fragile ceasefire in the region and continued diplomatic engagement between India and Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently visited New Delhi to participate in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting, where he held talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and also met Prime Minister Modi.
Earlier, after the death of then-Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in May 2024, India had declared a day of national mourning and sent then Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar to lead the Indian delegation at the funeral in Tehran.
Senior Iranian officials have made several visits to India in recent months, particularly in connection with BRICS-related engagements, underscoring ongoing diplomatic contacts between the two countries despite heightened regional tensions.
