A prominent Islamic cleric has called on the Federal Government and state authorities to adopt stricter measures against convicted bandits and kidnappers, including the enforcement of capital punishment, while rejecting ongoing reintegration initiatives for criminals.
The cleric, speaking during a public religious gathering, argued that individuals found guilty of kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes should face severe penalties under the law to deter rising insecurity across the country.
According to him, rehabilitation and reintegration programmes for convicted criminals have failed to address the growing security challenges facing many communities. He maintained that returning former bandits to society after undergoing government-sponsored rehabilitation sends the wrong message to victims and law-abiding citizens.
He further urged lawmakers to consider constitutional reforms that would strengthen the justice system and provide clearer legal frameworks for handling terrorism, kidnapping, and armed banditry cases.
The cleric stated that communities affected by violent attacks continue to suffer enormous losses, including deaths, displacement, and destruction of property. He argued that justice for victims should take precedence over policies aimed at rehabilitating convicted criminals.
His comments have generated reactions from various stakeholders. Supporters believe stronger punishments could serve as a deterrent to criminal activities, while critics argue that human rights considerations and due process must remain central to the administration of justice.
Security experts have repeatedly emphasized the need for a balanced approach that combines effective law enforcement, intelligence gathering, economic development, and judicial reforms to address insecurity.
Nigeria has witnessed persistent cases of kidnapping, banditry, and armed attacks in several regions, prompting renewed debates over the effectiveness of existing security strategies. The discussion surrounding capital punishment, rehabilitation programmes, and constitutional amendments continues to attract public attention as authorities seek lasting solutions to the country’s security challenges.
