Vice President JD Vance expressed optimism on Monday that the text of a crucial agreement to end the war in Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz would be unveiled this week, as negotiations continue to finalize its intricate details.
Speaking on CNBC, Vance underscored the United States’ expectation that the economically vital waterway would remain open without tolls on a long-term basis.
“Our expectation is that the Strait is going to be opened in a toll-free way for the long-term,” he stated, acknowledging the complexity of the ongoing discussions.
“That’s the sort of thing that we’re going to figure out in these technical negotiations. You know that there are a lot of very important details to figure out that we’re actually going to sit at the table and discuss together and figure out a path forward.”
The potential deal, which has already brought relief to global markets, represents the most significant breakthrough in resolving a conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and disrupted energy markets since joint US-Israeli strikes initiated hostilities in February.
However, the pact’s full implementation may hinge on an end to hostilities in Lebanon and defer crucial talks on Tehran’s nuclear program.
While many specifics are still being ironed out, Vance confirmed that Iran’s foreign minister and House speaker are slated to represent their nation at the signing ceremony in Switzerland this Friday.
The US representative for the signing was not disclosed.
