Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has issued a strong response to criticism reportedly directed at her by U.S. President Donald Trump, declaring that Italy remains a sovereign nation and that her political standing depends on defending Italian interests rather than maintaining personal alliances.
In a sharply worded statement, Meloni rejected what she described as repeated and unprovoked attacks, insisting that her government would continue to act in accordance with Italy’s national priorities.
“President Trump, these constant, unprovoked attacks are senseless,” Meloni said.
Meloni Defends Her Leadership
The Italian leader dismissed suggestions that her popularity is linked to her relationship with Trump, arguing that public support is determined by her performance in office and commitment to protecting Italy’s interests.
According to Meloni, her administration has consistently upheld agreements governing the presence and use of American military facilities on Italian territory while ensuring that Italy’s sovereignty remains respected.
She stressed that existing bilateral agreements must be honoured and cannot be altered outside their legal framework.
