Lionel Messi’s father is reportedly recovering from a health issue and is said to be progressing well, according to a statement from the family.
Speculation around Jorge Messi’s health grew after Lionel was seen wiping away tears with his shirt following his goal in Argentina’s match against Algeria at the World Cup.
Messi later explained that his emotional reaction stemmed from a personal matter unrelated to football, saying he had been going through a difficult period.
The Messi family confirmed that Jorge was currently under medical observation and asked for privacy, without disclosing details about the nature of his condition.
They stated that a person’s health and the peace of mind of those close to them should not become subjects of speculation or unnecessary media attention.
A source close to the family told a news agency that Messi’s father remains in a delicate condition at a hospital in Argentina.
Argentina are set to continue their title defence with a Group J fixture against Austria on Monday.
