The Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, on Thursday declared open the 2026 edition of the Abeokuta Film Festival, describing the Ogun State capital as her “second home” due to its rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality.
Speaking at the event held on May 28 in Abeokuta, Musawa commended the organisers and convener of the festival for sustaining a platform that promotes Nigeria’s creative industry.
The minister, who paid a courtesy visit to the Oba Michael Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, Alake of Egbaland, before the event, also visited the residence of Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka.
She noted that Abeokuta remained a hub of arts, culture and literary excellence, having produced globally recognised figures such as Fela Kuti, Kizz Daniel, Olusegun Obasanjo, and Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.
“Abeokuta is my second home apart from Katsina because of the warmth and reception I receive whenever I visit. The city stands tall as a centre of culture, arts and history,” she said.
At the event, the Alake of Egbaland received a Royal Evergreen Award, presented on his behalf by Aare of Egbaland, Dr Lai Labode Jnr, whom the minister described as “Aare of Africa” for facilitating the participation of over 40 countries’ cultural ambassadors at the recent Lisabi Festival.
The Executive Director of the National Film and Video Censors Board, Shaibu Husseini, was also honoured with a meritorious award in recognition of his contributions to Nigeria’s film and creative industry. The minister, who presented the award, lauded his impact on the sector.
Former Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, was equally recognised for his role in promoting arts and culture, including the construction of the pavilion where the festival was held.
Other highlights of the festival included fashion showcases, cultural dance performances, and film screenings, alongside awards for outstanding contributions to the industry.
Musawa, who attended the event with her aides, including her Senior Special Assistant, Hadiza Musa, also interacted with children at the festival as part of activities marking the Children’s Day celebration.
In his remarks, a member of the House of Representatives, Kehinde Soaga, commended the minister for her commitment, noting that she travelled from Katsina State to attend the festival despite the public holiday.
He wished her a safe return and praised her dedication to promoting Nigeria’s cultural and creative economy.
