In a fresh update shared on Facebook, Awata admitted that she is struggling to cope with the criticism and trolling that followed her decision to publicly share the incident.
She further disclosed that the online backlash has affected her confidence to the extent that she has avoided leaving her house.
“Social media is so toxic, daaamn. I am not okay. Mnataka kunipea ulcers na heart pressures,” she wrote, adding laughing emojis.
How Awata’s ordeal started
Awata’s ordeal began after she narrated how a man who had invited her for drinks at a rooftop restaurant in Nairobi allegedly excused himself several times before disappearing without paying the bill.
According to her, the man left behind a tab amounting to nearly KSh 10,000, forcing her to settle the charges despite claiming she had consumed food and drinks worth only about KSh 1,550.
The story quickly spread across social media platforms, attracting thousands of reactions and varied opinions.

While many Kenyans sympathised with her situation and condemned the man’s alleged actions, others questioned her decision to meet someone she had connected with online.
Awata defended herself against critics
Since the story went viral, Awata has repeatedly defended herself against criticism, arguing that accepting an invitation from someone who appeared genuine was not a mistake.
She has maintained that the focus should remain on the alleged failure of the man to pay his bill rather than on her choice to honour the invitation.
However, the continued scrutiny appears to have weighed heavily on her, highlighting how the emotional impact the viral discussion changed her life.
“You know I have not stepped out of my house because of these trolls,” she lamented.
Despite the criticism, Awata has remained firm in her position, insisting that she was treated unfairly and should not be blamed for another person’s actions.
