NOC announces sports medicine seminar for female medics

The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has announced a Sports Medicine Seminar for Female Medics aimed at strengthening knowledge and capacity in female athlete health and sports medicine.

The committee made the announcement in a statement issued on Thursday by its Public Relations Officer, Tony Nezianya.

According to the statement, the seminar is being organised with the support of Olympic Solidarity and is themed: “Fueling the Female Champion: Understanding the Female Athlete Triad and RED-S in the Adolescent Athlete.”

The programme will be held from June 21 to June 24, 2026 at the Media Centre, Binos Hotel and Suites, Benin City, Edo State.

The NOC said the seminar will bring together female medical professionals from the South South and South East regions of Nigeria to improve their understanding of issues affecting the health and performance of female athletes.

Speaking on the programme, the NOC President, Engr. Habu Gumel, described it as a landmark initiative and the first of its kind organised by the committee specifically for female medics.

Gumel emphasised that the seminar is designed to improve knowledge and understanding of critical health issues affecting female athletes, particularly adolescent athletes.

The committee also acknowledged the support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through Olympic Solidarity, noting that the initiative reflects a strong commitment to athlete welfare, sports medicine education, and empowerment of women in sport.

According to the statement, the South South and South East regions were deliberately selected to ensure wider geographical coverage of the programme, with plans to extend similar initiatives to other parts of the country.

The seminar will focus on the Female Athlete Triad and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), conditions that affect the health, nutrition, growth, and performance of adolescent female athletes.

Participants will be encouraged to actively engage in the sessions and maximise the opportunity to acquire knowledge that will improve athlete care and development within their communities and sporting environments.

The NOC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting athletes health and well-being through education, capacity development, and collaborative programmes aimed at advancing sports medicine in Nigeria.
