Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have killed two suspected kidnappers and recovered ₦2.2 million believed to be ransom proceeds, alongside a firearm, during a gun duel with a criminal gang in the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, noting that the operation was carried out by the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit following the abduction of a victim at Ogbe Village on June 11, 2026.
He explained that the police swiftly deployed intelligence and tactical teams after the incident, leading to sustained surveillance on the gang and mounting pressure on its members.
According to him, the victim was eventually released unharmed on June 18, after which operatives intensified efforts to track down the perpetrators.
Babaseyi said the breakthrough came when security operatives, acting on credible intelligence, traced the suspects to their hideout within the state.
He added that the suspects opened fire on sighting the police team, resulting in a gun battle.
“During the exchange, two of the suspected kidnappers were neutralised, while other members of the gang escaped with gunshot wounds,” he said.
The police spokesman said items recovered from the scene included a single-barrel gun, one expended cartridge, a mobile phone, and ₦2.2 million suspected to be proceeds of kidnapping.
He added that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and dismantle the gang.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Bode Ojajuni, commended the operatives for their bravery and professionalism, describing the operation as a testament to the Command’s resolve to rid the state of violent crimes.
Ojajuni reiterated that Ogun would remain hostile to criminal elements, assuring residents that the Command would continue to deploy intelligence-led policing and strengthen community partnerships to safeguard lives and property.
He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies to aid ongoing crime-fighting efforts.
