Former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege has declared his support for Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general election, while maintaining that he continues to back the key economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Omo-Agege made these remarks during an interview that was widely circulated on social media on Wednesday, where he addressed questions about his political direction following his recent exit from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

When asked why Nigerians should take his endorsement of Obi seriously given that he had publicly praised President Tinubu’s economic policies just weeks earlier, the former Delta Central senator made clear that his position on those policies had not shifted.

He explained that he did not voluntarily leave the APC, but rather felt abandoned by the party along with his more than 230,000 supporters in Delta State.

Despite his departure, he said he remains firmly behind some of the administration’s most consequential economic decisions particularly the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira describing them as necessary and well-conceived reforms that he supported then and continues to support now.

However, he argued that backing those policies does not mean exclusive loyalty to the APC or to President Tinubu, noting that Peter Obi had also championed similar economic positions.

On that basis, he said his endorsement of Obi should not be interpreted as a repudiation of the reforms themselves, but rather as a reflection of his belief that Nigerians would have greater trust in those same policies if implemented under Obi’s leadership.

He acknowledged that many Nigerians have reservations about the reforms but expressed confidence that Obi’s credibility and the public’s trust in him would make those policies more acceptable and effective under his stewardship than they have been under the current administration.

Omo-Agege was emphatic that the reforms are sound in principle, insisting that the policies themselves are not the problem and that his switch in political allegiance is about who he believes can best deliver on them for the benefit of ordinary Nigerians.
