The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party on Monday unveiled Dr Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo as its deputy governorship candidate, as the opposition party intensifies preparations for the forthcoming election.
The unveiling, held in Abeokuta, drew party leaders, stakeholders, youth groups and women organisations from across the state, underscoring growing momentum within the party ahead of the polls.
Speaking at the event, Sowunmi-Kolapo described her emergence as a call to service, pledging to deploy her experience and expertise toward delivering inclusive governance and grassroots-driven development.
She said, “Our mission is to restore hope to the people of Ogun State. We are committed to building a government that listens to the people, responds to their needs and ensures that no community is left behind.”
The deputy governorship candidate also assured party faithful of her loyalty to the PDP and its governorship flagbearer, Oladipupo Adebutu, stressing that unity and sustained voter mobilisation would be critical to electoral success.
Adebutu, in his remarks, described his running mate as a competent and experienced politician, noting that her selection followed wide consultations among party stakeholders.
He said the PDP ticket represents a credible alternative capable of addressing the socio-economic challenges facing the state, with a focus on job creation, industrial growth, improved infrastructure and policies targeted at citizens’ welfare.
Earlier, the state chairman of the party said the choice of Sowunmi-Kolapo reflected the PDP’s commitment to inclusiveness and competence, urging members to intensify mobilisation across the 20 local government areas.
Party supporters at the event said her emergence would boost the PDP’s chances, citing her track record in media, business and public service.
Sowunmi-Kolapo, a seasoned media professional and business executive, has over two decades of experience spanning journalism, corporate communications and public sector advisory.
She previously served as Special Adviser on Corporate Communications and Strategy to former Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga, under ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.
She also made history as the first female Group Business Editor at The Punch Newspapers, where she contributed significantly to business journalism and mentored young reporters.
Her political career includes serving as National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, becoming the first woman to hold the position.
