Shia Muslims Hold Peaceful Ashura Procession Through Central London

Members of the Shia Muslim community gathered in gathered in Marble Arch, Central London on Friday, June 26, 2026, to observe Ashura, one of the holiest days in the Islamic calendar, with a peaceful procession passing through Oxford Street as mourners commemorated the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali, grandson of Prophet Muhammad.

Participants, dressed in traditional black mourning attire, marched through the city carrying religious banners and symbols while reciting prayers and elegies in remembrance of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, who was martyred during the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.

Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram, holds deep religious significance for Shia Muslims, symbolizing sacrifice, justice, faith, and resistance against oppression. Millions of Muslims around the world mark the occasion each year through prayers, processions, and acts of charity.

The London procession was conducted peacefully under the supervision of the Metropolitan Police, with temporary traffic diversions in parts of Central London to facilitate the event.

Ashura commemorations are held annually across the globe, with major gatherings taking place in countries including Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, India, Lebanon, Bahrain, Nigeria, and the United Kingdom.
