Afrobeats singer Spyro has alleged that religious leaders are among the greatest beneficiaries of Nigeria’s ongoing insecurity and economic hardship, claiming the situation discourages them from speaking out.

The ‘Who’s Your Guy’ hitmaker made the assertion during a recent interview with a Lagos radio station, arguing that clerics have a fundamental duty to advocate for the welfare of their congregations but are failing to do so.

He also criticised Nigerian religious leaders for not providing their members with adequate civic and electoral guidance.

Spyro contended that the worse conditions become in the country, the more financially rewarding it is for religious leaders, suggesting this creates a perverse incentive for silence.

He maintained that crises generally tend to benefit the clergy more than any other group in society.

The singer called on Nigerians to extend the same standard of accountability applied to political leaders to religious figures, urging the public to demand more responsible and courageous leadership from clerics across the country.
