United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has said the U.S. is now actively working with the Nigerian government and security forces on counterterrorism operations.
Rubio made the statement while testifying before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee during a hearing on the State Department’s 2027 budget request.
According to him, the U.S. remains concerned about violence against Christians in Nigeria and is cooperating with Nigerian authorities to tackle terrorist threats.
“On Nigeria, where many were very concerned about violence against Christians, we are now actively in counterterrorism cooperation with the Nigerian government and Nigerian security forces,” Rubio said.
He also cited a recent joint operation involving Nigeria and the United States, which he said targeted a senior ISIS figure operating from inside Nigeria.
The comment comes amid renewed international attention on Nigeria’s security crisis, including attacks on communities, schools and places of worship.
Rubio’s remarks suggest a deeper security partnership between both countries as Nigeria continues to battle terrorism, banditry and other violent threats.
