Akinyi’s husband receives KSh 200,000
Speaking to NGBREAKINGNEWS, the mother of two boys emotionally narrated how her husband ended up in jail in November 2025.
“My husband worked as a security officer for a company. One day, he received KSh 200,000 on his phone at around 1pm. The money had been transferred from a bank. He waited for someone to call or communicate about the transaction, but no one contacted him.
After several hours without any communication, he thought it was a stroke of luck and used part of the money. Later that evening, he received a call from his boss, who asked him about the funds and how they had ended up in his account. His boss instructed him to return the remaining KSh 120,000, which he did. He believed the matter had been resolved,” she said.
Akinyi claimed that some of her husband’s friends learned about the incident and allegedly convinced his boss to alter the story and accuse him of stealing the money.

How did Akinyi’s husband end up in jail?
She further alleged that the friends later attacked her husband, assaulted him, stole his belongings, and left him injured.
“They then reported a false version of events to the police, knowing that my husband would go to report the robbery. Since the police had already been given a different account, they arrested him when he went to file his report. He was later jailed for three years.
Since then, life has been extremely difficult because he was our main provider. I used to do occasional menial jobs to earn some income and help with household bills. Without him and with only limited support from family members, things have become very tough. Out of desperation, I decided to go out with a placard and ask for a job,” she explained.
Akinyi noted that this was not the first time she had used a placard in search of employment, saying she had made several attempts before.

Why didn’t Akinyi leave her kids behind?
She explained that she could not leave her young children behind because she could not afford childcare services.
“There are also many concerns about children’s safety, including cases of abduction and other dangers. I could not take that risk. I carried my three-year-old son on my back while my five-year-old son played nearby on the rails.
No one has called me. No one even approached me to ask how they could help. I honestly do not know how I will survive. I am willing to do any job that can help me stay afloat,” she added.
The heartbreaking image of Akinyi standing under the scorching sun with her children highlighted the struggles many unemployed parents face while trying to provide for their families.
