US-Iran War Live Updates: The fragile diplomatic breakthrough between Washington and Tehran has seen fresh progress after the US waived sanctions on Iranian oil for 60 days and signalled progress on a final agreement.

US Vice President JD Vance said the talks in Switzerland had laid “a very good foundation” for a deal, while President Donald Trump claimed the Strait of Hormuz was now “totally open” and reiterated that Iran would never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. Iranian negotiators, meanwhile, departed Switzerland after the first day and a long night of technical talks.

Meanwhile, fighting has abated in Lebanon. The US, Qatar, and Lebanon discussed a new de-confliction mechanism aimed at preventing fresh Israel-Hezbollah escalation, even as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said troops would retain “full freedom of action” in southern Lebanon.

Elsewhere, Qatar confirmed that 12 Indian nationals were among those killed in the Ras Laffan gas facility incident; The Indian government is working to assist affected families and repatriate the victims’ remains.
