Reports emerging indicate that some of the students who died in the inferno lost their lives while trying to save others.

Fortune Amaya from Kakuma in Turkana County is one such heroine who risked her life to ensure others were safe.

Her grieving mother, Pauline Losike, narrated what other students told her about Fortune’s final moments, sharing her heartbreak over the loss.

She noted that her daughter had saved several students only to get trapped while attempting to escape from the ill-fated dormitory.

“By the time she was trying to get out of the dormitory, her friend saw her struggling to escape, but something held onto her leg and then the ceiling fell on her as she shouted for help,” said the devastated mother.

Once the ceiling collapsed on Fortune, she fainted, and even as her friends tried to figure out how to rescue her, it was too late; she was already unconscious on the floor.

Losike remembered her Grade 10 daughter as a source of inspiration to other children in her community.

Fortune, a member of the Red Cross Club at school, always took it upon herself to teach younger children in her community during school holidays.

“Even after primary school, she shared her books with the neighbours’ children and always taught them. When we viewed her body, her entire head was burnt, but her lower body was still intact. She had a wristband, a watch, and a rosary around her neck,” the heartbroken woman shared.

One of her family members, Esther Akiru, urged parents to talk to their children and instil discipline and morals in them.

Akiru noted that the students accused of starting the fire had effectively caused the deaths of their peers.

“What they did is unforgivable, but parents need to do a lot more in correcting such behaviour to avoid similar incidents,” she stated.

Just like Fortune, Gertrude Muthoni also reportedly died while trying to save her friend.

Her family noted that Gertrude had already escaped but chose to go back into the inferno to rescue her friend; unfortunately, she did not make it out.

“She was a very ambitious girl. She loved fashion and wanted to pursue law after school,” said a family member.
