[VIDEO] We Must Discard Things That Retard Our Progress As Nations — Ex-South Africa President Mbeki

Former President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, on Saturday said that the protracted conflicts in parts of Africa could be attributed to failure of leadership.

He, however, stated that this should not be a justification for Africa’s failure to maintain democratic governance.

Mbeki stated this while delivering a keynote address on democratic governance and peacebuilding in Africa at the unveiling of three books to mark the 84th birthday of a former military Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.).

He urged Africans to discard the things that retard the progress of the continent.

His comment comes amid the spate of insecurity in Nigeria and some parts of Africa.

Speaking virtually, he commended Abubakar, who is also the Chairman of the National Peace Committee, for promoting democracy not only in Nigeria but also in Africa.

According to him, the former Nigerian leader’s commitment to peace and stability stands out as his greatest legacy.
