FCT Minister Nyesom Wike on Tuesday addressed protesting teachers and civil society organisations gathered in front of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Secretariat in Abuja, assuring them that security agencies are actively working to secure the release of abducted teachers and students from recent school kidnappings.

Wike reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring the safe return of all victims, expressing confidence in the ability of the country’s security institutions to deliver results.

He urged that the efforts be prompt, acknowledging the urgency of the situation.

However, the minister cautioned strongly against the politicisation of security matters, arguing that insecurity is a national challenge that cuts across all regions and should be treated as a collective concern.

He pointed out that similar abductions had occurred in other states without triggering comparable protests in the capital, and called for a more unified and consistent national response to security threats.

Wike also defended the government’s commitment, stating that no responsible administration would deliberately leave its citizens vulnerable, while acknowledging the difficult circumstances under which security agencies are operating.

He added that significant progress had been made within established protocols toward securing the victims’ freedom.

Calling for national solidarity, the minister stressed that security threats affecting one part of the country ultimately affect everyone, and urged citizens to channel their energy into collective advocacy rather than partisan point-scoring.

The demonstration was prompted by growing public outrage over recent school abductions across the country, with teachers’ groups and civil society organisations demanding stronger security measures around schools and the immediate rescue of those still in captivity.
