25-year-old Corps member doctor passes away after alleged denial of sick leave

A 25-year-old medical doctor serving under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reportedly died after his request for sick leave was allegedly denied, sparking reactions on social media.

The deceased, identified as Wisdom Oghenetega Enakirerhi, was said to have fallen seriously ill while serving as a corps member.

Doctor Allegedly Requested Three Weeks’ Sick Leave

According to reports, the young doctor repeatedly requested a three-week sick leave to enable him recover from his illness.

However, it was alleged that his request was not approved despite his worsening health condition.

Family’s Plea for Medical Care

A doctor identified as Dr. Akpoyibo, who shared the incident online, claimed that the deceased’s father and brother, who are both medical doctors, appealed for him to be allowed to return home for proper medical care.

He said:

“A 25-year-old medical doctor who spent seven years in medical school, completed a one-year internship, and was serving in the NYSC was sick, asked for permission for a good three weeks’ leave, but he was not granted permission and now he is dead.”

He further alleged:

“Funny enough, the father and brother of this young man are doctors. They asked that he should be allowed to come home for care but they refused.”

Granted Leave Days Before His Death

According to the report, the young doctor was eventually permitted to return home, but only a few days before his death.

His passing has since generated widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing sympathy for his family and calling for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged denial of his sick leave request.
