AMD to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic as firms unveil gigawatt-scale AI infrastructure partnership

Chipmaker AMD and artificial intelligence startup Anthropic have announced a sweeping strategic partnership that will see AMD deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AI infrastructure for Anthropic while committing to invest up to $5 billion in the company as they deepen their collaboration on next-generation AI systems.

Under the agreement, Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Helios rack-scale solutions powered by AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs, with the first gigawatt scheduled to come online during the first half of 2027.

The deployment will feature AMD’s Instinct MI455X GPUs alongside EPYC ‘Venice’ processors, Pensando networking technology and ROCm software platform. Anthropic already uses AMD’s Instinct MI355X GPUs, and the latest announcement significantly expands that relationship.
Beyond hardware, the companies have also launched a multi-year engineering collaboration aimed at accelerating AMD’s software development using Anthropic’s Claude AI assistant.

The collaboration will focus on optimising AI workloads for AMD Instinct GPUs and speeding up development of AMD’s ROCm software ecosystem. AMD also plans to roll out Claude more broadly across its engineering and product development teams.

As part of the expanded relationship, AMD said that it intends to make a strategic equity investment of up to $5 billion in Anthropic in the future.

AMD Chair and Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su said the partnership combines the strengths of both companies to support the next phase of AI growth.

“We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Anthropic and deploy AMD Helios at gigawatt scale. This collaboration brings together Anthropic’s leadership in frontier AI with the full strength of AMD high-performance computing. Together, we will accelerate AI adoption at scale and establish Helios as a major platform for the next generation of AI infrastructure,” Su said.

Anthropic Co-founder and Chief Compute Officer Tom Brown said access to computing infrastructure remains critical as demand for Claude continues to grow.

“Access to compute is central to keeping Claude at the frontier and meeting demand from our customers. By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimising it for training and serving Claude. Running across a diversified range of hardware lets us map the right workloads to the right hardware,” Brown said.

The companies said that the combination of large-scale infrastructure deployment, long-term engineering collaboration and AMD’s planned investment lays the foundation for accelerating the development and deployment of next-generation artificial intelligence infrastructure worldwide.
