Former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has appointed Nollywood actor and politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, as his spokesperson for the 2027 presidential election campaign.

The appointment was disclosed through a snapshot of the letter shared by Okonkwo on his X handle on Thursday, July 2, confirming his role in Atiku’s emerging campaign structure following his emergence as the ADC presidential candidate.

According to the letter, the appointment was made in recognition of Okonkwo’s communication abilities and political experience.

“I am pleased to offer you an appointment as my Spokesperson for the 2027 General Elections in Nigeria, following my victory as the Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC),” the letter stated.

It further noted that the decision was based on confidence in Okonkwo’s professional qualities and public engagement skills.

“The letter said the appointment reflected Atiku’s confidence in Okonkwo’s competence, public communication skills, integrity, political judgment, and ability to represent the public positions of the ex-vice-president in a professional and responsible manner.”

The former vice-president also expressed optimism that Okonkwo would contribute meaningfully to the campaign and democratic process.

“While congratulating you on this appointment, I look forward to your valuable contribution to the campaign and to the advancement of democratic engagement in Nigeria,” the letter added.

Reacting to the development, Okonkwo expressed appreciation for the appointment, describing it as a reflection of Atiku’s democratic disposition.

“I give God all the glory to be appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his Spokesperson. I thank HE AA for the immense confidence reposed in me,” he said.

He further praised Atiku’s leadership style, saying the appointment demonstrated openness to dialogue and internal consensus-building.

“This appointment speaks volume of the democratic credentials of HE AA. Rather than pick offence against any of his associates for expressing genuine reservations of any action taken, HE AA always opts for dialogue and compromise that will engender solution to problems.”

Okonkwo also said discussions within the ADC coalition had addressed concerns around regional inclusion.

“Discussions with Atiku and other members of the ADC had addressed and guaranteed the interests of the south-east within the existing challenges posed by the Electoral Act, 2026, and the realities on the ground.”

He went on to appreciate key figures within the coalition, including former ADC national chairman, Ralph Nwosu, and Atiku’s aide, Ekene Onwuka, for their roles in facilitating the appointment.

Okonkwo also thanked his supporters and family, urging prayers as he takes on his new political communication role.

“Wisdom, courage, provision, and protection needed to carry out the challenging post which will usher in a glorious and great Nigeria.”

Okonkwo previously served as spokesperson for former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during the 2023 general election, but later parted ways with him amid political disagreements, including a defamation-related legal dispute.
