The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, has announced a ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, across the local government area.
According to the directive issued by the council, the ban will take effect from August 1, 2026, and will apply to commercial motorcycles used for passenger transportation within Obio/Akpor LGA.
The council said the decision forms part of efforts to strengthen security, improve public safety, and maintain law and order across the local government. Authorities believe the measure will help address security concerns and reduce traffic-related challenges associated with commercial motorcycle operations.
Residents and commercial motorcycle operators have been advised to take note of the new policy and make the necessary adjustments before the implementation date. The local government is expected to work with relevant security agencies to ensure compliance once the ban comes into force.
While the council has not yet announced specific alternatives for commuters who rely heavily on commercial motorcycles, many residents are expected to turn to tricycles, taxis, buses, and other approved means of transportation.
The latest directive adds to a series of measures introduced by the Obio/Akpor Local Government administration aimed at improving public order. Earlier this year, the council also prohibited street trading around the Okoro Nu Odo Flyover and Rumuodomaya Road to ease traffic congestion and enhance environmental sanitation.
As the August 1 implementation date approaches, residents and transport operators are expected to monitor further announcements from the local government regarding enforcement and any additional guidelines.
