A fire has destroyed a girls’ hostel at Chisenga Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Chitipa District, Malawi, leaving several students without accommodation and prompting a police investigation into the cause of the incident.
According to the Chitipa Police Station Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Rabson Mkandawire, preliminary investigations indicate that the fire may have started from an electrical socket while a mobile phone was being charged. However, authorities stressed that investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the blaze.
Witnesses said the fire spread rapidly through the hostel, forcing the students to flee naked for safety. In the confusion, some of the girls reportedly ran outside without clothes with little time to gather their belongings or properly dress, as they desperately escaped the flames.
