Chelsea are reportedly on the verge of reaching an agreement with England defender John Stones over a free transfer following the expiration of his Manchester City contract.
The 32-year-old centre-back became a free agent at the end of June and is now understood to be close to becoming Chelsea’s latest defensive addition ahead of the new season.
According to reports, manager Xabi Alonso is keen to strengthen his backline with experienced players, with Stones identified as a key target because of his leadership qualities and Premier League pedigree.
The reported pursuit represents a shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy under Alonso, with the club looking to complement its youthful squad with proven performers.
The development comes after Chelsea reportedly finalised terms for a £117 million move for Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers.
Chelsea, however, face competition for Stones’ signature.
Reports claim Arsenal are monitoring the England international as cover for the injured William Saliba, while Italian giants Inter Milan and Juventus have also expressed interest.
The Blues are also said to be in discussions over a possible move for Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, who is reportedly valued between £60 million and £65 million.
To create room for new arrivals, Chelsea are expected to reshape their defensive options.
Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile have both been linked with departures, while Trevoh Chalobah is reportedly in talks over a move to Serie A side Como.
Stones is currently on his summer break after helping England reach the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Although injuries limited his appearances during the closing stages of his Manchester City career, his displays at the World Cup are reported to have reinforced his reputation, making him one of the most sought-after free agents in the current transfer window.
