The decline marked the fifth consecutive quarter of falling shipments. Total smartphone shipments in the first half of the year were down 4.2% compared with the same period last year.
Huawei Technologies and Apple were the only smartphone vendors to record growth during the quarter, with shipments rising 19.4% and 24.4%, respectively.
“Huawei and Apple held their prices steady while competitors were raising theirs, and that gave hesitant buyers a reason to go ahead and purchase in a quarter when most of the market was giving them a reason to wait,” said Arthur Guo, Senior Analyst at IDC China.
Huawei retained the top spot with a 22.6% market share, followed by Apple with 18.1%. Xiaomi, ranked fifth, reported a 21.7% decline in second-quarter shipments, while Oppo and Vivo recorded shipment declines of 9.7% and 11.4%, respectively.
IDC said most Android smartphone makers increased prices or scaled back budget models in response to rising memory chip and component costs, discouraging consumers from upgrading their devices. The fading impact of government subsidies also weighed on demand after providing support in previous quarters.
