Jurgen Klopp has been appointed as the new head coach of the Germany national team, signing a contract that will keep him in charge until 2030.
The former Liverpool manager returns to coaching after a two-year break and succeeds Julian Nagelsmann, whose reign ended following Germany’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Germany were eliminated by Paraguay on penalties in the Round of 32, bringing another disappointing World Cup campaign to an early conclusion.
Klopp, who spent nine years at Liverpool, subsequently worked as global sporting director for teams under the Red Bull group during his time away from coaching.
The Germany appointment represents a new chapter for the experienced coach, who will manage a national team for the first time in his career.
Reacting to his appointment, Klopp described the opportunity to lead his country as a special responsibility.
He said: “The national team can connect us Germans like hardly anything else.
“That’s exactly what makes this task so special for me.
“I am grateful for everything I have experienced and learned in the last year and a half at Red Bull and for the openness that has made this agreement possible in the first place.
“Now I am looking forward to this special task in German football, which we will tackle together with humility and patience: to develop a team that fights for each other, that enjoys football and behind which the people of our country can rally with full conviction.”
Klopp brings considerable experience to the national team after previously managing Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.
He enjoyed his biggest successes with Liverpool, guiding the English club to the UEFA Champions League title in 2019 before winning the Premier League the following year.
German Football Association president Bernd Neuendorf revealed that Klopp was the federation’s preferred candidate for the position.
“From the very beginning, this was our dream solution,” Neuendorf said.
He added: “Personal talks with him convinced us that he is the right person for the job.”
Klopp will now be tasked with restoring Germany to the top of international football following years of disappointing performances at major tournaments.
Germany have not enjoyed major success since lifting the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in 2014.
They failed to progress beyond the group stage at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups before suffering another early elimination at the 2026 tournament.
Klopp will be assisted by Peter Krawietz, Pep Lijnders and former Germany international Sven Bender as he begins his first assignment in international management.
