His father coached him in his early years, but as Grigor showed promise in junior tournaments, it became clear he needed to train elsewhere. He turned professional at 16.
In 2007, Dimitrov joined the Sanchez-Casal academy, where he trained with Emilio Sánchez and Pato Álvarez. Starting in March 2009, he moved to Paris, France, to train at Patrick Mouratoglou’s tennis academy, where he spent the next four seasons. In 2012, he chose Patrick Mouratoglou as his coach.
Personal life

Later that year, he began dating American singer Nicole Scherzinger, lead vocalist of The Pussycat Dolls. Their relationship ended in 2019. Afterward, he was involved with businesswoman Lolita Osmanova, president of Luxury International magazine, and Romanian actress Mădălina Ghenea. National representation
Davis Cup
Dimitrov made his Davis Cup debut for Bulgaria in 2008 at age 16. Playing in front of a home crowd in Plovdiv, he went undefeated in both singles and doubles, helping Bulgaria move up to the second division of the Europe/Africa zone. At 17, he returned to the team for the 2009 Davis Cup and won both his singles matches, leading to a close 3–2 win over Hungary. Afterward, Dimitrov took some breaks from Davis Cup, which led to Bulgaria being relegated back to the lowest division.
Dimitrov returned to Davis Cup competition in 2012 as a top 100 player. The Bulgarian team performed well in the round-robin tournament in Sofia and earned promotion to the second division of the Europe/Africa zone again.
