Unidentified gunmen have killed two police officers and critically injured three others at a security checkpoint along the Mbodo/Aluu axis of Obiri-Kwerre Road in Rivers State on Monday night.
Available information indicated that the police team was performing routine stop-and-search operations when attackers in a vehicle suddenly opened fire at about 9:00 PM.
It was gathered that the killers were driving in a car and were stopped by the police operatives, and that the bandits, on stopping, opened fire on the officers mounting the road.
It was learned that two of the cops died at the spot, while two others who had bullet wounds were rushed to the hospital
The Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, ASP Blessing Agabe, confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday
She said the Command has opened a full-scale investigation into the incident.
Agabe said: “Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, promptly visited the crime scene to assess the situation firsthand.
“He also interviewed the officer who survived the attack and proceeded to the hospital, where he visited the injured officer currently receiving medical attention.
“The Commissioner has directed a comprehensive investigation into the incident and reaffirmed the Command’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that the perpetrators are identified, apprehended and brought to justice.”
