President Bola Tinubu has highlighted what he described as significant milestones recorded in Nigeria’s health sector since the inception of his administration, saying ongoing reforms are aimed at ensuring every Nigerian has access to quality healthcare regardless of location or income.
In a statement shared on his official X handle on Wednesday, the President said the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, had embarked on one of the most comprehensive health sector reform programmes in decades under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII).
According to Tinubu, the administration is revitalising Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs), expanding health insurance coverage, strengthening the health workforce, improving maternal and child healthcare, upgrading specialist hospitals, and positioning Nigeria as a hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing and healthcare investment.
“Every Nigerian deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of where they live or what they earn,” the President said.
He disclosed that more than six million Nigerians had been added to the national health insurance scheme since he assumed office, while 4,161 Primary Healthcare Centres are undergoing revitalisation, with 3,158 projects already completed.
The President also stated that 14,283 Primary Healthcare Centres, representing more than half of all PHCs nationwide, are now functional.
Providing further details of the administration’s interventions, Tinubu said over 102 million children had been vaccinated against measles and rubella, while 17.1 million girls had received the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to protect them against cervical cancer.
He added that 78,054 frontline health workers had been trained, while 20,000 health professionals had been recruited into Federal Tertiary Hospitals across the country.
According to the President, the Federal Government has also delivered 503 health infrastructure projects nationwide and is developing three world-class cancer centres to improve specialised healthcare services.
“These reforms are about saving lives today while building a stronger, more resilient health system for generations to come,” Tinubu said.
He urged Nigerians to review the Nigeria Health Sector Impact Report, describing it as a document that highlights the major achievements recorded so far under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the health sector, Tinubu said improving healthcare remains central to the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“A healthier Nigeria is central to our Renewed Hope Agenda. We are building a healthier, stronger and more prosperous nation, one reform, one community and one life at a time.
“Our work continues. The best days of Nigerian healthcare are still ahead of us,” he said.
