Four Family Members Escape ISWAP Enclave, Surrender To Troops In Borno

Four family members who fled an enclave controlled by the Islamic State West Africa Province have surrendered to troops of Operation HADIN KAI in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.

The individuals, comprising two women, a teenage boy and a 10-month-old baby, reportedly escaped from the Kunde terrorist enclave in the Mandara Mountains before turning themselves in to troops of C Company, 192 Battalion (Mechanised), at about 8:30 a.m. on Friday.

Counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, disclosed the development, identifying the family members as Hauwa Muhammadu, 40; Aisha Muhammadu, 22; Adamu Muhammadu, 15; and 10-month-old Muhammad Mustapha.

According to him, preliminary findings showed that the family abandoned the insurgents’ hideout due to sustained military operations and worsening humanitarian conditions within the camp.

Makama said continuous offensives by Nigerian troops, coupled with acute shortages of food and other basic necessities, had made survival increasingly difficult for those remaining in the enclave.

He added that the deteriorating conditions forced the family to flee and seek refuge with government forces.

A search conducted on the family after their surrender reportedly led to the recovery of ₦32,100.

The surrendered individuals have since been documented in line with military procedures and are currently in the custody of the 192 Battalion for profiling and other administrative processes.

The latest surrender comes amid intensified military offensives against Boko Haram and ISWAP strongholds in the North-East, with security forces sustaining pressure on insurgents in the Mandara Mountains and other parts of Borno State.

The military has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
