Andrea Pirlo is set to become the new head coach of the Italy national team after accepting a verbal proposal from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).
The former Italy midfielder emerged as the federation’s choice following Pep Guardiola’s decision to reject the opportunity to take charge of the Azzurri.
According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Pirlo is finalising a long-term contract that will run through the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also confirmed the development on X, revealing that Pirlo has accepted the project presented by FIGC technical director Paolo Maldini and special adviser Leonardo.
Romano wrote: “Andrea Pirlo accepts the verbal proposal and he’s set to become new Italy head coach, here we go!
“Pirlo said yes to long term project presented by Paolo Maldini and Leonardo. He’s set to sign in the upcoming days, waiting for formal steps.”
Italy have been searching for a new head coach since Gennaro Gattuso stepped down following the country’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Carlo Ancelotti was initially identified as the federation’s first choice but declined the opportunity to remain focused on his commitment to the Brazil national team.
The FIGC subsequently pursued former Manchester City manager Guardiola, who also rejected the job after considering the proposal.
Guardiola opted to prioritise an extended break with his family, while there was also reportedly a significant gap between his €20 million salary expectations and Italy’s budget.
Following Guardiola’s decision, Maldini moved quickly for his former AC Milan teammate Pirlo.
The 2006 World Cup winner is expected to sign a deal until 2030 reportedly worth €1.5 million annually.
Pirlo will be tasked with rebuilding the Azzurri, beginning with navigating their UEFA Nations League group and attempting to return Italy to major international tournaments after missing three consecutive World Cups.
The former Juventus coach leaves his recent position at Dubai-based United FC to take the national team job.
An official announcement from the FIGC is expected in the coming days once the remaining formalities have been completed.
