Kevin Kwan took birth in Singapore on November 8, 1973, to a wealthy family of Singapore. His family has a long list of famous individuals starting from his great-grandfather, Oh Sian Guan, who was a founding director of Singapore’s oldest bank, the Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation. Kevin’s parents were also well-to-do people. His father, Samuel Kwan, is an engineer, whereas his mother, Elizabeth Kwan, is a pianist. Kevin shifted to America when he was 11 years old.
His family relocated to Clear Lake, Texas. Kevin completed his high school at Clear Lake High School at the age of 16. He continued working for his studios until 2008 when he thought about changing the track of his career to become an Author. He co-authored with Deborah Aaronson to write a book titled ‘Luck: The Essential Guide.’ This book got published in 2008.
He started searching for stories or inspiration to write a novel. He had published Crazy Rich Asians, the book which he wrote by taking inspiration from his childhood. Kevin started writing the book in 2009 while being with his father during his treatment for cancer. This novel changed his life, as it got a solid response. This success inspired him to come up with the sequel of the first book in June 2015 titled China Rich Girlfriend. This book also became an international bestseller.
