Klopp agrees to coach Germany after Nagelsmann exit

Jürgen Klopp has agreed to become Germany’s next head coach after Julian Nagelsmann stepped down following the country’s disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign.

The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed on Friday that Klopp had informed the federation he was ‘fundamentally willing’ to take over the national team, with discussions now underway to finalise the appointment.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano announced on Instagram that Klopp had accepted the role, with only the final contract details left before a full agreement is reached.

Romano wrote: ‘HERE WE GO SOON! Jürgen Klopp has accepted to take over as NEW GERMANY HEAD COACH. ‘

Contract details being confirmed ahead of full agreement but Klopp has already accepted the role and wants the move.

‘Klopp opened doors as revealed two days ago and he’s set to agree final details… and then sign to replace Nagelsmann.

‘JÜRGEN KLOPP IS BACK AT IT.’ Nagelsmann resigned four days after Germany’s penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an end to his tenure despite having a contract running until 2028.

Explaining his decision, the 38-year-old admitted leaving the position had been difficult. ‘The decision was anything but easy for me,’ he said. ‘My top priority has always been the success of the team.

After such a bitter disappointment, it deserves the chance of a new beginning.’ Nagelsmann also apologised to supporters following Germany’s early exit. ‘I am sorry and hurt from the bottom of my heart that we disappointed you and couldn’t give you any more football nights at this World Cup.’

The DFB thanked Nagelsmann for his almost three years in charge, while sporting director Rudi Völler paid tribute to the departing coach. ‘He is and remains an excellent coach and I am convinced that he will continue to follow his path successfully,’ Völler said.

Klopp, who guided Liverpool to the UEFA Champions League and Premier League titles before leaving Anfield in 2024, has been serving as Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer since early 2025.

According to Sky Germany, his agreement with Red Bull contains a clause allowing him to leave for the Germany national team. If the remaining contract details are completed, Klopp will return to management for the first time since leaving Liverpool and will begin the task of rebuilding the four-time world champions ahead of Euro 2028.
