A young man has publicly expressed his disappointment after pursuing a course that he says ultimately left him stranded.

When did Omito Andrew graduate from KMTC?

Omito Andrew shared his frustrations in a TikTok video, revealing that he had decided to retire from nursing and explaining the reasons behind his decision.

He said he studied at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) and graduated in 2023, but things did not go as planned, forcing him to make what he described as a difficult decision.

“I am a 25-year-old retired nurse, and let me tell you something about nursing and why I retired at 25. I graduated from KMTC in 2023. I worked in the nursing field for two years. The nursing profession in this country is pathetic, especially in the private sector.

There are over 22,000 nursing graduates from KMTC every year. That doesn’t even include those who graduate with nursing degrees from universities and private colleges. More than 100,000 nurses graduate every year in this country, yet I don’t think we even have 100,000 healthcare facilities,” he said.

What were Omito Andrew’s salary expectations?

Andrew recounted attending a job interview where he was asked about his expected salary, only for the interviewer to laugh at his response.

Drawing from his experience working in maternity and emergency departments, he requested a monthly salary of KSh 40,000, saying it was already modest considering the country’s economic situation.

“Someone just laughs and tells you another applicant asked for KSh 20,000, and even that was considered too much. Apparently, the moment you leave that interview room, there’s someone willing to work for KSh 10,000.

You can wake up in the morning and go looking for a job only to find five volunteer nurses at one facility who have worked there for one or even two years without being employed. You can also find hospitals where nurses have gone for five months without being paid, especially because of the Social Health Authority (SHA) situation in the country,” he said.
