The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested a tanker driver who allegedly fled after knocking down and killing a commercial delivery motorcycle rider along Kodesho Road, opposite Mrs Filling Station, inward Awolowo Way/Oba Akran in the Maryland-Ikeja area of Lagos.
According to LASTMA, the crash involved a fully loaded tanker conveying 33-litre groundnut oil with registration number T-19089LA.
The agency said the tanker struck and fatally crushed the delivery rider, who died instantly at the scene.
The driver reportedly attempted to escape without stopping to assist the victim or report the incident.
However, LASTMA officials launched an immediate pursuit, intercepted the vehicle and arrested the driver.
The suspect and the tanker have since been handed over to the State Traffic Department (STD) of the Area F Police Command, Ikeja, for investigation and possible prosecution.
LASTMA officials also secured the accident scene, managed traffic and coordinated emergency response efforts to minimise disruption to motorists during the recovery operation.
Delivery riders at the scene informed the victim’s family and expressed grief over the loss of their colleague.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the crash as “heartbreaking and avoidable” and extended condolences to the deceased’s family.
He urged operators of articulated vehicles, tankers and other heavy-duty trucks to obey traffic regulations, avoid reckless driving and excessive speeding, warning that fleeing the scene of an accident is a serious offence punishable under the law.
Bakare-Oki also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to working closely with the Nigeria Police Force and other emergency responders to enhance road safety and ensure prompt management of traffic incidents across Lagos State.
LASTMA urged members of the public to report road crashes and traffic emergencies through its toll-free emergency hotline, 3367, for immediate response.
