Lawyer mourns mother who defied death to save his life

An Ibadan, Oyo State-based lawyer and public commentator, Mumin Jimoh, has announced the death of his mother, Risikat Jimoh, paying an emotional tribute to the woman he said risked her own life to save his when he was a child.

The deceased, who was 71, died at about 7:02am on Thursday at her residence in Akobo Ojuirin, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

During her lifetime, she was a trader and was widowed after the death of her husband, Alhaji Jimoh Agboluaje, on December 14, 2009.

Announcing her passing, Jimoh reflected on one of the defining moments of his childhood.

He recalled that when he was three years old, he became seriously ill and his mother rushed him to Adeoyo Hospital in Yemetu, Ibadan for urgent medical treatment.

According to him, while making the journey, she encountered the Ibadan masquerade, Oloolu, at a time when tradition forbade women from seeing the masquerade.

Despite the danger, she explained that she could not allow her son to die and chose to continue the journey in search of medical care.

Jimoh said the masquerade eventually withdrew the threat against her after hearing her explanation and allowed her to proceed to the hospital.

Recalling the incident, he said the courageous decision made by his mother was the reason he survived.

Reflecting on her death, he wrote: “This is how I survived and the said mother is dead now oooo.

“May Allah forgive her and reward her with Aljanat Fridaous.

“Amin.

“I am sad.”

Jimoh is an attorney and public commentator based in Ibadan, Oyo State.

He is known for publishing articles on national security, policing reforms, legal issues, and social development in Nigerian media outlets, including the Nigerian Tribune and The Eagle Online.

The deceased was remembered by her family as a devoted mother whose courage and determination left a lasting impact on those closest to her.
