Mbappe far superior to Yamal — George Weah

Former Ballon d’Or winner George Weah has insisted Kylian Mbappe is “far superior” to Spain youngster Lamine Yamal, dismissing comparisons between the two attacking stars.

Weah made the remarks after watching Mbappe score twice in France’s 3-0 victory over Sweden at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking to Spanish television programme El Chiringuito, the former AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Liberia striker described the France captain as one of the game’s outstanding players. “He’s a phenomenon,” Weah said.

“He’s truly a very good player and a very good goalscorer.”

The 1995 Ballon d’Or winner also urged caution over comparisons involving 18-year-old Yamal, saying the Barcelona winger was still developing.

“Well, Lamine Yamal is just a young boy, as you know. “You shouldn’t compare him to Mbappe,” Weah said.

“Mbappe is a phenomenon, while Lamine is still developing and growing.

“All I hope is that Lamine continues on his path. “But you can’t compare him to Mbappe. Everyone knows that Mbappe is far superior.”

Mbappe has been one of the standout performers at the ongoing World Cup, scoring six goals to remain firmly in contention for the Golden Boot.

His brace against Sweden also took his career World Cup tally to 18 goals, leaving him one behind Lionel Messi in the race to become the competition’s all-time leading goalscorer.

The France captain came close to completing a hat-trick against Sweden after striking the post and having another effort ruled out for offside.

Weah believes Mbappe’s consistency at the highest level is what separates him from emerging talents, despite Yamal’s rapid rise in international football.
