Media personality Simi Sanya has stirred debate on social media after sharing her views on cooking in relationships, arguing that being someone’s girlfriend does not automatically mean it is her responsibility to prepare meals for her partner.
Speaking during a recent discussion, Sanya questioned the common expectation that women should spend weekends cooking for their boyfriends simply because they are in a relationship. Her comments quickly went viral, sparking widespread reactions from Nigerians with differing opinions.
According to her:
“You can’t tell me to come to your house over the weekend and be cooking for you because we’re in a relationship, was that the plan? No? Didn’t I tell you before?”
Sanya went on to explain that her opinion is reflected in her own marriage, revealing that she has never been an expert in the kitchen. She said her husband has accepted her limited cooking skills without making it an issue.
In her words:
“Like me now in my marriage, I only know how to cook spaghetti and yam and egg, bread and tea and the boy has know and he hasn’t fought me since I got married he has been eating the spaghetti with all goodness in his heart. Did he die?”
Her remarks suggest that a healthy relationship should not be defined by traditional domestic expectations, but by understanding and mutual acceptance between partners.
The comments have since divided opinion online. While many users agreed that cooking should not be seen as a compulsory duty for girlfriends, others argued that partners should willingly care for one another in different ways, including preparing meals when necessary.
As the conversation continues, Sanya’s perspective has added to the ongoing debate about changing gender roles, shared responsibilities, and personal choices in modern relationships and marriages.
