“Jerop travelled to Thailand in June 2025 in search of greener pastures. She was taken there by an agent. Upon arrival, she started looking for a job and kept applying. Fortunately, she got an opportunity to teach English at a school because it is a foreign language and not many people there speak or write it fluently. She got the job, and everything was going well.
It wasn’t long before she fell ill, about four months after starting her new job. The illness took a toll on her, but she did not seek professional medical attention immediately, and her condition worsened. When she could no longer bear it, she went to the hospital,” she said.
When Jerop arrived at the hospital, she was immediately admitted because her condition was critical and required urgent medical attention.
Mercylinda Jerop transferred to ICU
Doctors carried out several tests and diagnosed her with pneumonia before beginning treatment in an effort to stabilise her condition.

“Her condition kept fluctuating. It would improve, then deteriorate again. Her blood pressure, especially, was never stable. The doctors gave her medication to try to stabilise it, but after some time, it seemed her body started rejecting the medicine, leading to further complications. She was eventually transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where she remained for two months until she passed away,” Koskei said tearfully.
Koskei said the last time she spoke to her daughter was shortly before she was admitted to hospital, when Jerop was struggling to breathe.
During their final conversation, Jerop complained of a severe headache, stomach pain, and back pain, leaving her mother deeply worried.
Mercylinda Jerop complains of body pain
“She complained of pain in different parts of her body. I still remember her last words as though it were yesterday. She was in so much pain, and after she was admitted to the hospital, we never spoke again. We remained in communication with the hospital, though. Before she fell ill, we used to talk almost every day. However, she never told me about her illness until it became serious,” she added.
Jerop’s death has left the family devastated and burdened with a huge hospital bill that must be cleared before her body can be repatriated to Kenya.
The family needs approximately KSh 1.5 million to settle the outstanding hospital expenses and transport her body home for a dignified burial.

“We have held several fundraising drives, but the money we have raised is still not enough. We have also reached out to the Kenyan Embassy in Thailand, and we are waiting for their response,” Koskei said.
