The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has shared the story of an unexpected encounter that he says significantly influenced his approach to governance and security.
Speaking about his time as Governor of Anambra State, Obi recalled efforts to tackle insecurity around the Upper Iweka area of Onitsha when a man, widely regarded by many as mentally ill, approached him with a simple but profound piece of advice.
According to Obi, the man told him that rather than waiting to arrest criminals after they had committed crimes, the government should focus on preventing crime before it occurs.
Obi said the remark prompted him to rethink his security strategy, leading his administration to place greater emphasis on crime prevention, intelligence gathering, and proactive policing.
He noted that the shift in approach contributed to improved security in the area.
Reflecting on the encounter, Obi said the experience taught him never to judge people based on their appearance or social status, stressing that wisdom and valuable ideas can come from anyone.
