Operatives of the Bauchi State Police Command have arrested a 40-year-old man, Clement Anthony, over the alleged murder of a community leader and recovered a locally made single-barrel firearm allegedly used in the attack.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Abubakar, disclosed this in a statement made available on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the incident was reported at the ‘A’ Division Township Police Station on July 19, 2026, by a 47-year-old resident of Unguwar Ngas in Bauchi Local Government Area.
Abubakar said: “The complainant stated that on the same date, while at Unguwar Ngas, Inkil, Bauchi, one Clement Anthony, male, 40 years old, of the same address, armed himself with a locally made single-barrel gun and intentionally fired it at Mr Jacob Bature, male, 55 years old, Mai Anguwan Ngas, also of the same address.
“The victim sustained serious gunshot injuries to his right ribs and slumped unconscious, leaving him in a coma.”
He added: “He was immediately rushed to the ATBU Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, where a medical doctor examined him and confirmed him dead as a result of the gunshot.
“The corpse has since been deposited in the hospital morgue for further investigation.”
Following the incident, police operatives arrested the suspect.
According to Abubakar: “Following the incident, police operatives swung into action and arrested the suspect.
“During the arrest, the locally made single-barrel gun and one empty cartridge were recovered from him.”
He said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation.
Abubakar added: “The suspect will be charged in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.”
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the incident and assured residents of the command’s determination to tackle violent crimes.
According to Abubakar: “The Commissioner of Police has condemned the act and assured members of the public that the Command remains committed to ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice.”
The police also urged residents to refrain from the unlawful possession of firearms and to promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
