The Portuguese Football Federation has officially confirmed the departure of national team head coach Roberto Martinez following the expiration of his contract.
The federation announced on Wednesday that it had formally ended its contractual relationship with the Spaniard and his coaching staff, two days after Martinez disclosed he would step down following Portugal’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a statement, the federation said: “The Portuguese Football Federation announces that it officially ended its contractual relationship with the National Team Coach, Roberto Martinez, and his coaching staff this Wednesday.”
Martinez had announced after Portugal’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16 that he would leave the role, ending a three-and-a-half-year spell in charge of the national team.
The 52-year-old was appointed Portugal coach in January 2023 after leaving Belgium and guided the Seleção to the UEFA Nations League title in 2025.
His tenure, however, ended with Portugal’s World Cup campaign concluding in the Round of 16 following defeat to Iberian rivals Spain.
The Portuguese Football Federation said it has already begun the process of appointing a new head coach to continue the team’s pursuit of future honours.
Martinez departs after overseeing Portugal’s World Cup campaign and delivering the UEFA Nations League trophy during his time in charge.
