U.S. outbreaks of a parasitic infection that causes explosive diarrhea are under control, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Tuesday, even as cases continue to rise.
“We do have the outbreak under control,” he told reporters at a press conference when asked about the spread of cyclosporiasis.
“We have done extensive forensics, epidemiological forensics and we have identified the source of the outbreak. We, and the companies that are involved, have implemented a recall,” Kennedy said.
His remarks come just hours after Food and Drug Administration officials said a “false positive” result when testing Taylor Farms lettuce did not change data supporting an advisory that triggered a voluntary recall of Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce.
“To clarify, this false-positive lab sample DOES NOT change the basis for FDA’s ongoing outbreak investigation or the overwhelming epidemiological data supporting the current voluntary recall by Taylor Farms,” the agency wrote in a social media post.
The investigation into the source of cases nationwide remains ongoing.
There are now more than 10,000 cases reported across more than 40 states, according to The Independent’s latest analysis of state and federal data.
